Guideline, Conducts and Points of Unity for the Speak Out!

Guideline

This is a community forum to give immigrant workers, youth, and people of color a chance to talk about their experience and suggestions for immigrant rights, the immigrant solidarity movement, the anti-sweatshops movement, racism, and ethnic solidarity.

Therefore, in the breakouts, we'll use the so-called "fish bowl" ally-and-caucus model. At the first-half of the section to mainly identified immigrants and POC will facilitate and to speak, the "allies" joint as listeners.

Allies will joining to speak and participate at the second-half of the section when the floor is opened up for discussion and questions at the end of the breakout.

At the end of each breakout meeting, we should have notetakers for note taking and reporting back to the plenary, and we will suggest one action item or demand to the community.

The timeline of the breakouts:

30 minuets: discussion

15 minuets: propose one action item or demand to the plenary

30 minuets: allies speak, question and answer session, and discussion

Rules of the Speak Out!

People who attend the Speak Out! should agree to the following rules of conduct. Anyone who violates the rules will be asked to leave:

1) No violence against anyone, including sexism, racism, homophobia. We consider that violent language is a form of violence, and that using an over-strong tone to attack other people is unacceptable.

2) We shall keep positive energy, constructive energy and dialogue during the event. Disagreement is OK but no one shall disrupt the meeting, including fighting or arguing when the facilitator tells you to stop. (If you cannot handle the heat, just go outside and cool off with refreshments.)

3) No one shall bring alcohol and weapons.

Drafting the Points of Unity and action plan

The key goals for the Speak Out! is:

- media Outreach, and sending a strong message during the RNC of our demands

- promoting ISN and other immigrant/community organizations

- recruiting new ISN members

- a call for 2005 action strategy and demands.

Therefore, as we said earlier, at the end of each breakout meeting, we shall suggest one action item or demand to the community; and by combining all the different suggestions from the different breakout sections, we will create a "Immigrant Workers Points of Unity" for the RNC mobilization throughout the week.

Also, we will call for a "2005 Action Strategy" (This will be discussed before Aug. 27 and drafted before the meeting), including plans for possible actions.

With both the "Immigrant Workers Points of Unity" and "2005 Action Strategy," we can create a very strong action message to the activist community for the post-RNC period.
